Insights about belief

About Belief

Let’s say that your goal is to be a thin person; You want to lose weight. That is the content of what you may have failure feelings about, the actual ability and capability for you to lose weight.

Now ask yourself: What is some other goal that you are already sure that you will be able to get to in the future? An example might be: I know I am going to take a vacation. I planned this vacation and it’s coming up in two weeks, and there might be a problem at work, and there might be problems with baggage handlers at the airport, and the plane might be late, but I am going to take that vacation. I will get there somehow.

The point is that it is not so much a belief that the goal will happen as it is a belief about your capability to make goals happen.

We never know reality in the future. That is not the point. The point is to organise our thoughts and expectations about a desired goal in the very same way you would organise your thoughts and expectations about goals that you believe you can accomplish.

For instance: Maybe I can say I have confidence that I can buy a new car. Now, what I need to do is to take all the things about losing weight, and make them fit into the same framework as the way I think about buying a car.

Bottom line: It’s only a belief, and hard though it might be…it can be changed.
